Aquila Wykes was born about 1570 probably the son of Edward Wykes of Gloucestershire. He married Dorothy Duncombe when he was about 40 years old and around this time he became keeper of the Gatehouse prison next to Westminster Abbey.  The prison was often used for political prisoners including Sir Walter Ralegh on the night before his execution

Aquila’s son, also named Aquila, married Mary Knightley, from a wealthy Kingston family.  He succeeded his father as prison keeper but died only four years after his father.  His wife took on the post and remarried one of her Royalist prisoners, Sir Edward Broughton, just one year later.

Aquila’s daughter Mary, inherited £1000 from her father when she was 21, but her remarried mother left only £50 in her will to her “ungrateful and undutiful daughter”.

Mary married Robert Dackombe and lived in Holborn, where their fortunes deteriorated.  By a twist of fate however, much of her mother’s fortune would eventually come to Mary’s descendants.  Mary was probably buried at St Bride’s Fleet St in 1727, three years after her husband.
